Topaz
specimen number:
2063414
location:
Tarryall Mts, Park Co., Colorado, USA
description: The Tarryall Mountains, situated in Park County, Colorado, are composed of Proterozoic igneous formations, notably Precambrian granitic plutons associated with the Pikes Peak batholith. Over millions of years, late-stage magmatic fluids rich in fluorine penetrated fractures and miarolitic cavities within the granite, crystallizing into exceptional mineral specimens, including high-quality topaz. Mineral prospectors first documented topaz deposits in the region during the late nineteenth century, triggering small-scale mining and panning operations along local creek drainages. Today, the Tarryall Mountains remain a famous locality for amateur rockhounds and mineral collectors who search the weathered granite scree and pegmatite pockets for gem-grade topaz crystals that range in color from clear and sherry to rich hues of pale blue.
A loose glassy gemmy pale blue crystal of topaz. In great condition. Cleaved on the base, a choice thumbnail for this Colorado classic.
Size: 1.6 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm (thumbnail)
