Topaz
specimen number:
2063151
location:
Topaz Mtn., Juab Co., Utah, USA
description: Topaz Mountain in the Thomas Range of Utah consists of Tertiary-age rhyolitic rock formed by volcanic activity roughly six to seven million years ago. As the gas-rich lava cooled, vapor cavities and pockets formed within the rock, allowing fluorine-rich vapors to deposit stunning semi-precious gemstone crystals. The area became famous among mineral collectors and prospectors following early geological surveys in the late 19th century and subsequent mineral discoveries in the early 1900s. The site is world-renowned for yielding hard, transparent crystals that are naturally a warm amber or sherry color, though prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade them to clear. Rockhounds frequently visit the public slopes today to crack open the porous volcanic host rock and search for these prized gems.
A beautiful glassy Sherry colored single terminated crystal of topaz. In super condition, minor rhyolite matrix attached near the base.
