Formed by topaz-bearing rhyolitic lava flows and tuffs dating back to the Tertiary period, the area features lithophysae and cavities where hot fluorine-rich vapors crystallized various minerals. Historically, the site has attracted rockhounds and miners searching for prized amber and clear topaz crystals, along with red beryl, bixbyite, and pseudobrookite. While commercial mining of the region primarily targeted nearby deposits, recreational and claim-based rock collecting remains popular among mineral enthusiasts exploring the public and staked lands of the Thomas Range.
A beautiful deeply colored glassy gemmy sharply formed crystal of topaz, this with a bright lustrous crystal of bixbyite 0.4 cm on edge near the base of the crystal. In super condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
