location:
Khoroshiv Raion (Volodarsk-Volynskii), Zhytomyr Raion, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine
description: Situated within the Proterozoic Korosten pluton of the Ukrainian Shield, Khoroshiv Raion (formerly Volodarsk-Volynskyi) in Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine, is world-famous for its massive chamber pegmatites that formed nearly two billion years ago. Initial surface mineral discoveries in the region occurred in the late nineteenth century, and large-scale industrial mining began during the Soviet era primarily to extract piezo-electric quartz for radio electronics, during which workers uncovered enormous fluid-filled pocket cavities containing spectacular mineral specimens. Following the transition from industrial extraction, specimen miners and private collectors prized the locality for producing some of the world's most impressive topaz crystals, which occur in large, gem-clear prismatic forms featuring complex natural dissolution etching. The topazes found here are celebrated among collectors for their rich spectrum of hues, ranging from sky blue and sherry yellow to highly coveted bi-colored crystals that display distinct zones of blue and champagne-pink within a single specimen.
Absolutely gorgeous glassy gem crystal of blue topaz. Complete all around, in excellent condition. This weighs 59.19 g. The blue color is outstanding on this one.
