Spodumene
specimen number:
8911044
location:
Urucum, Minas Gerais, Brazil
description: Located in the Doce River Valley of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the Urucum pegmatite deposit is a world-famous granitic pegmatite locality celebrated for its extraordinary rare-element mineralization. Formed within Precambrian metamorphic host rocks during ancient magmatic and hydrothermal events, the complexly zoned pegmatite created large open pocket cavities rich in lithium, beryllium, and tantalum. Artisanal miners and specimen collectors have worked the Urucum mine for decades, retrieving exceptional gem-quality minerals from its rich subterranean pockets. The locality is particularly renowned among gemologists and collectors worldwide for producing some of the finest known specimens of kunzite, the pink-to-violet gem variety of the lithium pyroxene mineral spodumene, which often forms exceptionally large, crisp, double-terminated crystals of striking clarity and color saturation.
A beautiful naturally etched glassy and gem pale pink crystal of spodumene, this the variety often called kunzite. Famous from this locality, this is perfect all around. The crystal weighs 21.7 g.
