Zircon

specimen number:
9771512

location:
St. Peters Dome, El Paso Co., Colorado, USA

description:
A sharp loose lustrous crystal of zircon. In good condition, nice for this locality and species.

The St. Peters Dome district in El Paso County, Colorado, is anchored by Precambrian Pikes Peak granite cut by complex pegmatite dikes and fluorite-quartz vein systems. Initially prospected for gold and silver, the area gained greater prominence for commercial fluorspar production during the early and mid-20th century. Today, it remains a popular destination for mineral collectors and rockhounds searching for specimens such as fluorite, smoky quartz, and rare-element minerals weathered from the surrounding granitic pegmatites.
