Zircon
specimen number:
2063595
location:
Kipiwa complex, Quebec, Canada
description: Located within the Grenville Province of western Quebec, Canada, the Kipawa complex is a deformed, thrust-related alkaline pluton composed primarily of peralkaline syenites, pegmatites, and surrounding calc-silicate rocks. Discovered and extensively studied for its rich assemblage of unusual exotic minerals, the site has a history defined by rare-earth element exploration, mineralogical research, and specimen collecting rather than large-scale metal production. Zircon occurs abundantly within the complex, frequently forming part of the intricate agpaitic mineral suites and metasomatic reaction zones alongside other rare silicate phases. Because of its unique geological environment, the locality has drawn mineral collectors and researchers for decades to study its complex crystallization history and recover exceptional accessory mineral specimens.
Lustrous brown grouping of thick zircon crystals stacked on matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
