Zircon
specimen number:
2063107
location:
Crystal King Zircon mine, Wichita Mts, Comanche Co., Oklahoma, USA
description: The Crystal King mine is situated within the igneous rock formations of the Wichita Mountains in Comanche County, Oklahoma, where ancient granitic and gabbroic intrusions created favorable conditions for accessory mineral crystallization. Geologically, the site is well known among mineral enthusiasts for producing notable brown to black zircon crystals embedded within a pale matrix. Rather than a large-scale commercial industrial excavation, the location functioned primarily as a localized prospect and mineral collecting site where hobbyists and collectors historically sought out specimens. Collecting activities have since been constrained due to the protected status of the surrounding Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, making historical specimens prized additions to regional mineral collections.
Outstanding locality example for the species, a lustrous chocolate brown grouping of zircon crystals with little attached matrix. This is basically one large crystal on matrix with several smaller ones. In super condition. These are quite rare and not often seen available on the market. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. A second the label with the specimen from somebody named Halstead. He collected the specimen in 1950.
Size: 3.5 x 3.5 x 2.0 cm (miniature)
