Rutile
specimen number:
2063309
location:
McGregor Lake, Val-des-Monts, Outaouais, Quebec, Canada
description: Situated in the Grenville Geological Province of southern Quebec, the region surrounding McGregor Lake in Val-des-Monts, Outaouais, features high-grade metamorphic Precambrian rocks, including marble, gneiss, and skarn deposits. Historic mining in the area focused heavily on mica, apatite, and feldspar during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Mineral collectors later targeted these old pegmatite and metamorphic deposits, discovering notable occurrences of rutile, a titanium oxide mineral known for forming dark reddish-brown to black prism-like crystals and classic elbow twins embedded within quartz or calcite matrices.
Good locality example for the species, a lustrous terminated crystal of prismatic rutile measuring 2.9 x 1.2 x 0.6 cm in size embedded up on a quartz matrix with several secondary rutile crystals present as well. Very slight micro-damage present, at first glance the secondary crystals appear damaged, these are naturally crystallized. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 7.5 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
