Meionite with Diopside
specimen number:
2063723
location:
near McGregor Lake, Quebec, Canada
description: The area near McGregor Lake in western Quebec lies within the ancient, highly metamorphosed Grenville Geological Province, where regional tectonic events and high-temperature hydrothermal activity deeply altered old sedimentary limestone layers into complex skarns and pegmatitic veins. This geological setting is renowned among mineral collectors for yielding magnificent, large, multi-faced crystals of the scapolite group, specifically the calcium-rich member known as meionite. Historic mineral collecting efforts in this rural district have produced stout, structurally complex prismatic crystals that frequently exhibit striking fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Due to restricted access and the sporadic nature of manual collecting in the area over the decades, well-preserved meionite specimens from near McGregor Lake remain prized additions to advanced systematic mineral collections.
Colorless blocky opaque semi lustrous terminated crystal of meionite 1.5 cm across on a matrix of dark green crystallized diopside. There are several smaller crystals of meionite present as well. In good condition with minimal damage present. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. He collected the piece in 1999.
