Sierra Blanca in Lincoln County, New Mexico, is a massive mid-Tertiary volcanic and intrusive complex that formed between roughly 38 and 26 million years ago, though prospecting and lode mining in the area did not begin until the mid-to-late 1860s (with mining activity largely tapering off by the 1930s and 1940s). Geologically, the range consists of an immense, deeply eroded volcanic pile and intrusive stocks (primarily syenite and monzonite) that host open fractures and miarolitic cavities. These unique pocket systems allowed silica-rich hydrothermal fluids to slowly crystallize into prized, highly transparent to smoky quartz crystals—often featuring distinct phantoms, vitreous luster, and alpine-like clarity—making the Sierra Blanca and Smokey Bear claims one of the premier quartz localities in the United States.
