description: Freiberg, located in Saxony, Germany, is a historic mining hub renowned for its complex hydrothermal silver and base metal vein deposits hosted within metamorphic and gneissic rock formations. Mining operations began in the 12th century, driving centuries of rich silver production and establishing the world-famous Freiberg University of Mining and Technology. Among its classic mineral specimens, pyrargyrite, historically prized as a dark red silver ore, was frequently recovered from these rich veins by historic miners and mineral collectors, contributing significantly to the region's legendary mineralogical heritage.
Fine old German classic, lustrous crystals of metallic pyrargyrite to 0.4 cm in size are covering most of one side of this matrix. In very good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark. His label notes that he acquired the piece via trade with the Seaman Museum at Michigan Tech University.
