Acanthite
specimen number:
2063649
location:
Freiberg, Saxony, Germany
description: The Freiberg mining district in the Erzgebirge of Saxony, Germany, is one of the most famous historic silver-producing regions in Europe, with underground operations dating back to the twelfth century. Its geology is defined by complex hydrothermal vein systems cutting through metamorphic and gneissic basement rocks, rich in polymetallic mineralization. Centuries of intensive mining transformed the area into a global cradle of geosciences and mineralogy, producing vast amounts of silver and associated ore minerals. Acanthite, a primary low-temperature silver sulfide, occurs abundantly within these epithermal veins, frequently forming as massive crusts, coatings, or distinct crystals that replaced original high-temperature silver phases. Today, classic Freiberg acanthite and associated silver specimens are treasured by museum curators and historical mineral collectors worldwide.
Nice old time thumbnail specimen, non-lustrous sharp dark crystals of acanthite measuring to 0.3 cm in size covering the front of matrix. This is in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection at the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum, Michigan Technological University.
Size: 2.3 x 1.7 x 1.0 cm (thumbnail)
