Pyrargyrite with Miargyrite, Quartz
specimen number:
8911084
location:
San Jose Mine, Oaxaca, Mexico
description: The San Jose Mine, situated in the San Jeronimo Taviche Municipality of Oaxaca, Mexico, targets a major intermediate-sulfidation epithermal deposit hosted within Tertiary volcanic sequence rocks, predominantly composed of fine-grained quartz veins and calcite fill. Modern commercial production commenced in September 2011, establishing the site as a key high-grade silver and gold producer alongside a long historical footprint of localized mining activity. Mineral collectors value the locality for its rare recovery of fine sulfosalt specimens, most notably pyrargyrite, which forms striking, lustrous, dark metallic-red hexagonal crystals nestled within bright white quartz matrix cavities. These vibrant dark-red silver sulfosalt crystals display remarkable color saturation and brilliant metallic Adamantine luster, making specimens from the San Jose Mine highly prized additions to Mexican mineral collections.
Lustrous metallic micro crystals of both pyrargyrite and miargyrite scattered across a crystallized white micro quartz matrix. Good locality example for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the Alton collection.
Size: 3.7 x 2.6 x 1.4 cm (miniature)
