Mimetite
specimen number:
2063653
location:
Mt. Bonnie Mine, Northern Territory, Australia
description: The Mount Bonnie Mine in the Northern Territory of Australia is hosted within a folded Mesoproterozoic sedimentary sequence consisting of interbedded shale, siltstone, and greywacke, associated with volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization. Initially discovered around the turn of the twentieth century and later worked for gold, silver, and base metals through various underground and open pit operations, the site became widely celebrated by mineral collectors for its exceptional secondary zone minerals. Among these, mimetite occurs as highly lustrous, translucent barrel-shaped crystals and small hexagonal prisms. Ranging in color from pale green and yellow to rich brown, these fine specimens formed through the oxidation of primary sulfide ores and remain treasured examples of Australian micro and cabinet mineralogy.
Pale yellowish slightly translucent lustrous crystals of mimetite to 1.3 cm across set nicely up on matrix. This is in good condition. Nice thumbnail for this Australian classic.
Size: 2.3 x 1.7 x 1.3 cm (thumbnail)
