Meionite with Biotite, Titanite
specimen number:
2063506
location:
Litchfield, Pontiac RCM, Outaouais, Quebec, Canada
description: Located in the Outaouais region along the Ottawa River, the municipality of Litchfield in Pontiac RCM sits within the Grenville Geological Province. The region's geology features Metamorphic Precambrian bedrock, notably Grenville skarns, marble bands, and intrusive veins that created favorable zones for mineralization. During the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, regional mining operations across Pontiac County focused on industrial commodities such as mica, feldspar, molybdenite, iron, sand, and gravel. Over the decades, mineral collectors have frequented famous local mineral sites like the Bear Lake occurrence, highway rock cuts, and local quarries to collect well-crystallized specimens including titanite, phlogopite, diopside, scapolite, and vibrant salmon-colored calcite veins.
Nice example of this member of the scapolite series, a prismatic lustrous pale greenish to colorless crystal 3.0 cm in height embedded up on a lustrous orange massive calcite matrix with small crystals of biotite. In good condition. This appears to have been etched from the enclosing calcite matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.0 x 5.0 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
Collection: Ray DeMark
