Laumontite
specimen number:
2062749
location:
Nashik, Maharashtra, India
description: The region around Nashik in Maharashtra, India, is rooted in the extensive Deccan Traps flood basalt province formed by massive volcanic activity millions of years ago. While the area is not historically recognized for heavy metal or ore mining, quarrying and excavation in the surrounding basalt formations frequently expose world-class mineral pockets. These cavities within the volcanic rock served as ideal environments where circulating silica-rich waters crystallized spectacular secondary mineral deposits, most notably magnificent formations of zeolites like stilbite and heulandite.
Prismatic white crystals of laumontite in a cluster with little attached matrix. Nice example for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.8 x 3.0 x 1.2 cm (miniature)
