Fluorapophyllite-K with Stilbite
specimen number:
9892180
location:
Ahilyanagar, Nashik, Maharashtra, India
description: The region spanning Ahilyanagar (formerly Ahmednagar) and Nashik within Maharashtra, India, is situated on the massive basaltic lava flows of the late Cretaceous Deccan Traps. Hydrothermal fluids migrating through gas vesicles, fractures, and miarolitic cavities in these cooling basalts deposited extraordinary secondary minerals, most notably lustrous stilbite, apophyllite, scolecite, and heulandite. Rather than traditional industrial hard-rock mining, specimen recovery here historically developed alongside regional infrastructure growth, stone quarrying, and agricultural water-well digging. Discoveries, such as the famous green apophyllite pockets encountered during rural well excavations near Rahuri in Ahilyanagar and active quarry operations near Nashik and Sangamner, established the area as a premier global source of world-class zeolite specimens. Today, specimen extraction is carefully managed by local teams, dealers, and prospectors who manually preserve fragile crystal clusters for museums and private collections worldwide.
A grouping of green slightly translucent very lustrous pseudo-cubic fluorapophyllite crystals with minor matrix. A tiny crystal of colorless stilbite is present as well. In good condition.
