Fluorite
specimen number:
2063451
location:
Dundas Quarry, West Flamborough, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
description: Situated in Ontario, Canada, the Dundas Quarry operates within the Silurian-age dolostone formations of the Niagara Escarpment, primarily extracting dolostone for aggregate construction materials. During active and historic quarrying operations, the expansive carbonate rock faces and vugs exposed diverse mineral assemblages formed by low-temperature hydrothermal activity and groundwater circulation. The site gained international renown among mineral collectors for yielding exceptionally rich suites of secondary sulfate and carbonate minerals, including rare species like serpierite and devellite. Although commercial quarrying activities continue to transform the regional landscape, access for collecting has become heavily restricted, preserving the legacy of this world-class mineral locality.
Glassy mostly gemmy colorless cubic crystals of fluorite to 1.2 cm on edge across the top of matrix. All of the prominent crystals are in good condition, slight damage along the edges of the matrix only. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 7.0 x 5.0 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
