Sphalerite
specimen number:
2062775
location:
Dundas Quarry, West Flamborough, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
description: The Dundas Quarry in West Flamborough, Hamilton, Ontario, operates within the middle Silurian Lockport Formation, extracting extensive dolostone sequences primarily for aggregate and metallurgical flux. Its mining operations have long exposed significant geological features such as horizontal slickensides along small fault planes and stress-relief bedrock pop-ups on the quarry floor. Within the vugs and fractures of these carbonate rocks, hydrothermal and groundwater brines historically deposited various mineral phases, yielding notable specimens of amber to dark brown crystal clusters of sphalerite alongside fluorite, calcite, and marcasite.
Semi lustrous black sharp crystals of sphalerite to 1.5 cm in size on matrix. Some cleaving present along the lower edge of the specimen, the prominent crystals are in good condition. Good locality example for the species. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 6.7 x 4.0 x 2.0 cm (small-cabinet)
