Meridian Aggregates Quarry, Black Rock, Lawrence Co., Arkansas, USA
description: The Meridian Aggregates Quarry near Black Rock in Lawrence County, Arkansas, excavates the Ordovician Powell Dolomite and Smithville Formation to supply regional crushed stone and aggregate. Geologically, these fine-grained dolostones contain solution cavities, vugs, and paleokarst features formed by ancient weathering and regional fluid migration through the Ozark Plateaus. Hydrothermal activity deposited colorful secondary minerals inside these rock openings, making the quarry a famous site for collectors seeking well-crystallized specimens of quartz, dolomite, pink dolomite, chalcedony, and occasionally dark brown sphalerite. Although active commercial quarrying prioritized road construction materials, field collectors and mineral clubs historically frequented the site with permission, documenting its distinct vug fillings and carbonate mineral assemblages before modern site safety restrictions strictly limited public access.
Attractive pink saddle shape crystals of lustrous pearly dolomite to 1.5 cm in size covering nicely the top of matrix. In very good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark, note that the locality given on this label is the small town of Imboden. I am sure that this comes from a quarry in BlackRock.
