Calcite with Dolomite
specimen number:
2062932
location:
Meridian Aggregates Quarry, Black Rock, Lawrence Co., Arkansas, USA
description: The geology of the Meridian Aggregates Quarry near Black Rock, Arkansas, features Paleozoic carbonate strata located along the southern edge of the Ozark Mountains, characterized by sedimentary rock formations that host localized vugs and mineralized pockets. Historically developed primarily for commercial crushed stone and aggregate production rather than specimen mining, the quarrying operations uncovered cavities yielding notable collector minerals such as dolomite, calcite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite tied to regional Mississippi Valley-type mineralization. Over the decades, industrial rock-crushing and quarrying activities transformed the site into a well-known local source for both heavy construction materials and prized regional mineral specimens.
A light orange slightly translucent semi lustrous scalenohedral crystal of calcite on matrix with pink dolomite crystals. The color is due to the presence of iron oxide. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 3.5 x 2.3 cm (miniature)
