location:
Barranco Salobral, Teruel, Aragon, Spain
description: Barranco Salobral, located near Teruel in the Aragon region of Spain, is famous among mineral collectors for its exceptional specimens of teruelite, a distinctive variety of dolomite. The geology of the site consists of Triassic clay and gypsum beds, where dark gray to black, pseudooctahedral dolomite crystals formed in a hypersaline sedimentary environment. Teruelite was first recognized and described from this specific valley in the nineteenth century, quickly making the locality renowned worldwide. Mining at the site has historically focused on gypsum, but the location remains widely known among mineral collectors who visit to collect the well-formed, lustrous black teruelite crystals embedded in the soft surrounding rock.
Lustrous brown crystals of dolomite to 0.9 cm in size, this the variety sometimes called teruelite, on a marl matrix. In good condition.
