Bixbyite
specimen number:
2062798
location:
Topaz Mtn., Thomas Range, Utah, USA
description: Topaz Mountain in the Thomas Range of Utah is renowned for its exceptional mineral specimens formed within Tertiary-age topaz rhyolite flows. The area features extensive gas cavities and lithophysae where rare minerals crystallize from volatile-rich vapors. Among these is bixbyite, a striking dark oxide mineral discovered and named after early collector Maynard Bixby. The location has a rich history of both professional mineralogy and recreational rockhounding, drawing collectors to search its volcanic rock cavities for topaz, bixbyite, and related unique species.
A sharp mirror bright lustrous crystal of bixbyite 0.6 cm on edge set nicely up on a white rhyolite matrix. A small crystal of topaz is present as well. This is in excellent condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 7.0 x 5.0 x 4.0 cm (small-cabinet)
