Beryl (irradiated)
specimen number:
2063405
location:
Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
description: Located at the tectonic collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian plates, the high-altitude Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan is renowned for its extensive systems of complex granitic pegmatites. These rare-element pegmatite veins intruded host metamorphic schists and granodiorites, cooling slowly over millions of years to yield large, highly complex cavities lined with gem-quality minerals. Historically, organized specimen collection and artisanal gemstone mining gained momentum during the late twentieth century in famous districts such as the Shigar, Hunza, and Haramosh valleys. Today, local miners extract world-class aquamarine, topaz, tourmaline, and associated mineral specimens from treacherous high-elevation cliffside mines, catering to international markets and mineral collectors. Exposing blue aquamarine to gamma rays or laboratory neutron irradiation can alter its color centers, shifting the tone to produce golden-yellow heliodor. This process oxidizes trace iron impurities present inside the crystal structure from a divalent state to a trivalent state, causing the mineral to absorb blue light and exhibit a rich yellow or greenish-yellow appearance. Because this artificial color enhancement produces physical and spectroscopic characteristics identical to naturally occurring yellow beryl, detecting irradiation treatments in heliodor remains a major challenge for gemological laboratories.
A beautiful loose gem terminated crystal of beryl, this a bright yellow color in the variety known as heliodor. This has been irradiated to bring out the color. Years ago these were sold as being natural and coming from Takijistan. In perfect condition all around.
