Sawtooth Mtns., Idaho, USA
description: Located in central Idaho, the Sawtooth Range Click to open side panel for more information is a rugged alpine region formed during the Cretaceous Period through intense granitic intrusion and subsequent tectonic uplift, resulting in massive batholiths pierced by numerous pegmatite dikes. These hydrothermal pocket formations are famous for yielding exceptional gem-quality aquamarine crystals, alongside smoky quartz and feldspar. Discovered and explored by prospectors and mineral collectors in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the remote high-altitude peaks became a legendary destination for specimen miners. Today, while commercial operations are absent, recreational collectors and outdoor enthusiasts still seek out loose crystals weathered from the harsh pegmatite outcrops, making the area a classic American mineral locality.
A gorgeous sharp gem crystal of blue beryl, this the variety known as aquamarine. Naturally crystallized on the base, razor-sharp in perfect all around. This weighs 3.72 g.
