Beryl
specimen number:
2063102
location:
Dassu, Braldu Valley, Shigar, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
description: The geology of Dassu in the Braldu and Shigar Valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is defined by extreme tectonic collisions between the Indian and Eurasian plates, which drove intense regional metamorphism and the intrusion of volatile-rich granitic magmas. As these melts cooled, hydrothermal fluids concentrated rare elements into complex zoned pegmatites that formed crystal-lined cavities within high-altitude metamorphic rocks. Historically, local prospectors and miners have targeted these remote, vertical cliff faces during brief summer windows to extract world-class mineral specimens. Dassu has consequently gained global renown among collectors for producing some of the finest, most intensely saturated blue aquamarine crystals known, frequently displaying large prismatic habits and exceptional transparency.
A pale blue loose gem sharply terminated crystal of beryl, the variety known as aquamarine. In perfect condition all around. Specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark and dates to about 1980.
Size: 3.7 x 1.0 x 0.9 cm (miniature)
