specimen number:
2063340
location:
Blue Ball mine, Gila Co., Arizona, USA
description: Located within the Globe-Miami mining district of Gila County, Arizona, the Blue Ball Mine is a small, historical copper deposit situated in secondary oxidized zones. Geologically, the site is renowned among rockhounds and mineral collectors for its unique nodular concretions and spherical hollow geodes consisting of deep blue azurite, often intergrown with fibrous green malachite or lined with micro-crystals. Mined predominantly in the twentieth century as a small surface and underground operation for copper ore and lapidary material, the locality earned its distinct name from the rounded shape of these collectible azurite "balls," making specimens from this site highly prized in private collections and gem museums worldwide.
A matching set of two azurite geode halves, the interior lined with sparkling micro crystals of deep blue azurite. Minor malachite present as well. Classic material for the locality, this is in good condition.
