Lavender Pit, Bisbee, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA
description: The Lavender Pit, located in the historic Bisbee mining district of Cochise County, Arizona, USA, is a massive open-pit copper mine situated within a complex geologic setting dominated by the Paleozoic Escabrosa Limestone and the Cretaceous intrusive Ruby Star Granodiorite. Developed by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1950 to extract large volumes of low-grade porphyry copper ore, the operation generated over 80 million tons of copper before closing in 1974. Beyond its immense industrial production, the mine became famous among mineral collectors for producing world-class specimens of vibrant blue azurite, green malachite, and brilliant turquoise, cementing Bisbee's legacy as one of the premier mineral localities in North America .
Fine miniature sized grouping of very sharp lustrous deep blue blocky azurite crystals, the largest measuring 1.5 cm on edge. Minor attached malachite. This is crystallized completely all around and in great condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
