specimen number:
2063341
location:
Blue Grotto Prospect, La Sal Co., Utah, USA
description: The Blue Grotto Prospect, part of the broader Blue Crystal Mine complex situated in the Lisbon Valley Mining District near La Sal, Utah, features copper mineralization hosted within permeable sandstones, conglomerates, and shales. Hydrothermal fluids carrying dissolved metals permeated these sedimentary rock layers along local fault zones, resulting in secondary copper mineral deposits in oxidized zones. Historically operated as a small-scale underground and surface copper mine, the locality transitioned over time into a celebrated target for specimen miners and amateur collectors. It became internationally recognized among mineral enthusiasts for producing vibrant, deep blue azurite crystal balls, nodules, and rich green malachite coatings.
A fine grouping of lustrous blue azurite crystals, these averaging 0.3 cm in size. Complete all around with very little attached matrix on one side. Minor green malachite present. In good condition, the quality is excellent. From the early 1980s. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.3 x 4.0 x 3.5 cm (miniature)
