Wulfenite
specimen number:
2354093
location:
Red Cloud Mine, La Paz Co., Arizona, USA
description: Located in the Silver District of La Paz County, Arizona, the Red Cloud Mine sits within fault zones cutting through Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Discovered in the late nineteenth century, the mine was operated primarily for silver and lead, but it achieved worldwide fame for producing extraordinary mineral specimens. The oxidation of primary veins within the upper levels formed rich vugs and pockets filled with brilliant, fiery red-orange tabular wulfenite crystals. These exceptional specimens became legendary among both miners and mineral collectors, drawing enthusiasts to the site for decades after commercial metal production ended.
A gem orange red lustrous platy crystal of wulfenite 1.1 x 0.7 x 0.3 cm in size standing up within a vug in matrix. The vug is lined with crystallized quartz and micro fluorite. This is in very good condition.
