Located in the Tucson Mountains within what is now Saguaro National Park West, the Old Yuma Mine dates back to initial claims in the 1870s and operated sporadically as a producer of lead, copper, silver, and gold until its final closure in 1947. Geologically, the deposit sits within a complex Cretaceous volcanic caldera terrain where hydrothermal activity and fault-controlled dikes introduced base-metal sulfides. Subsequent deep oxidation weathering of these veins transformed the primary ores into a famous collection locality renowned for bright crystals of wulfenite and vanadinite.
