Wardite with Lazulite
specimen number:
2063373
location:
Rapid Creek, Yukon, Canada
description: Located in the remote Richardson Mountains of northern Yukon, Canada, the Rapid Creek area is world-famous among mineral collectors for its unique geological setting. The locality consists of late Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, predominantly sideritic ironstones and shales, where deep-seated fracturing and fluid circulation allowed rare phosphate minerals to crystallize within small fractures and cavities. Discovered by geologists during regional mapping in the mid-1970s, Rapid Creek quickly became a legendary site for field collecting and specimen mining despite extreme weather and difficult wilderness access. It is best known for producing some of the world's finest crystals of wardite, which occur as brilliant, well-formed greenish-blue to pale green dipyramidal crystals lining the open vugs of the iron-rich host rock.
Pale bluish green lustrous sharp translucent crystal of wardite set on a very small amount of matrix with small deep blue crystals of lazulite. In good condition.
