Childrenite with Lazulite, Quartz
specimen number:
2354069
location:
Rapid Creek, Yukon, Canada
description: Located in the Richardson Mountains of northern Yukon, Canada, Rapid Creek is a world-renowned mineral locality famous for its Cretaceous Period ironstone and shale formations. These phosphorus-rich sedimentary rocks underwent fracturing, allowing hydrothermal fluids to form open cavities filled with rare, exceptionally crystallized phosphate minerals. First explored thoroughly by the Geological Survey of Canada in the mid-1970s, the extremely remote site never supported commercial mining, but seasonal collection by geologists produced world-class specimens. Rapid Creek is celebrated for superb blue lazulite, the official gemstone of Yukon, as well as wardite, augelite, whiteite, kulanite, gormanite, and rapidcreekite, a rare mineral species first discovered at this very locality.
Light brown acicular crystals of childrenite measuring to 0.6 cm in size on matrix with deep blue crystallized lazulite and minor quartz. Good example for the species and locality. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Eric Laskowski.
