description: Jacksonville, California, was founded as a rich gold-mining supply center in 1848 along the Mother Lode belt and gradually declined after mid-20th-century lode operations wound down, eventually becoming inundated by Don Pedro Reservoir waters. Geologically, the area features deposits situated near the contact between serpentine on the west and slate and schist on the east, intersecting narrow bands of greenstone. Within this chromium-rich metamorphic and serpentinite-bearing environment, rare microcrystals of the brilliant green garnet variety uvarovite have been found coating local matrix rock.
Deep green lustrous crystals of uvarovite to 0.3 cm in size on matrix. This one is in good condition, as most of these show contacting. Very little micro-damage present. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark and was originally collected by John Filbert.
