Uvarovite
specimen number:
2063671
location:
Saranovskii Mine, Sarany, Gornozavodskii, Perm Krai, Russia
description: The Saranovskii Mine, located near the village of Sarany in the Perm Krai region of Russia, sits within the western slope of the Central Urals and is world-famous for its rich ultramafic igneous complexes and massive chromite deposits. Mining operations at Sarany began in the late nineteenth century to supply industrial chromium, eventually expanding into extensive underground workings that continue to yield exceptional mineral specimens. The locality is particularly celebrated among collectors for producing vibrant violet-to-emerald-green chromium-bearing garnets, emerald-green chromian clinochlore varieties, and well-crystallized chromite within hydrothermal veins cutting through serpentinized rocks. Metamorphic fluid activity combined with chromium enrichment in the host rock facilitated the growth of these brightly colored silicate minerals, making the Saranovskii Mine one of the premier classic mineral localities in the Ural Mountains.
The top of this matrix is richly scattered with brilliant green lustrous crystals of uvarovite measuring to 0.3 cm in size. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark and dates to the early 1990s.
Size: 10.5 x 6.5 x 1.5 cm (cabinet)
