specimen number:

location:
South Baldface Mtn., Chatham, Carroll Co., New Hampshire, USA
description: Situated in Carroll County near Chatham, New Hampshire, South Baldface Mountain features exposed granite formations associated with the White Mountain igneous province, a series of Mesozoic intrusive complexes. Geologically, topaz occurs within miarolitic cavities and granite pegmatites formed during the late-stage cooling and crystallization of silica-rich magma. The locality gained recognition among regional collectors in the mid-to-late twentieth century, as amateur mineralogists explored the steep, glaciated granite ledges for gemmy topaz crystals. Known for sharp faces, clear to pale golden or brownish hues, and associations with quartz and microcline, specimens from this site remain prized examples of New Hampshire alpine pegmatite mineralization.
A loose sharply formed absolute gem quality and colorless crystal of topaz. In great condition all around, very choice thumbnail for this classic locality.
