location:
Nura-Taldy W deposit, Shet, Karaganda, Kazakhstan
description: The Nura-Taldy deposit, located in the Shet district of the Karaganda region in Kazakhstan, is a well-known mineralized system associated with hydrothermal activity, quartz veins, and greisenization processes tied to intrusive magmatism. Primarily recognized as a tungsten and beryllium occurrence, the geological setting features complex vein networks that host various accessory minerals. While industrial mining interest has historically focused on its metal potential, the locality is also famous among mineral collectors for producing exceptional specimens, particularly high-quality blue topaz crystals extracted during exploratory and mining phases, especially in the late twentieth century.
Unusual locality example for the species, this a loose beautiful blue lustrous and mostly gemmy terminated crystal of topaz. In great condition. I visited this locality in 1993. At the time it was a set of trenches maybe 10 feet deep and 6 feet across. I do remember finding one nice topaz thumbnail specimen. I was told crystals got to the size of a soda can, but to this day I've never seen one from here.
