Titanite on Epidote
specimen number:
2062997
location:
Arendal Iron Mines, Arendal, Agder, Norway
description: The Arendal mining district in southern Norway, known locally as the Arendalsfeltet, is situated within highly metamorphosed Precambrian gneiss and amphibolite formations where iron-bearing minerals occur as lenses, veins, and skarn-like replacement deposits. Commercial extraction of high quality iron ore in the region began around 1585, providing vital raw material for early Norwegian iron works, and continued with various interruptions until operations wound down in the twentieth century.
Neat locality example from the 1970s, a thin platy lustrous crystal grouping of titanite 2.8 x 2.0 x 0.3 cm in size is standing straight up and free from a crystallized epidote matrix. In good condition all around. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.5 x 3.0 x 3.0 cm (miniature)
Collection: Ray DeMark
