Thomsonite
specimen number:
2062743
location:
Soegaon, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, India
description: Soegaon, located in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) district of Maharashtra, India, rests upon the extensive Deccan Traps, which are thick flood basalt formations created by massive volcanic activity millions of years ago. The region features rugged terrain and weathered rock layers typical of the Deccan plateau, where local quarrying and excavation activities often expose cavities filled with secondary minerals. Within these basalt vesicles, mineral collectors and miners have discovered exceptional specimens of zeolite minerals. Among these, thomsonite occurs as a rare and desirable hydrous framework silicate, typically forming stunning spherical, radiating, peach, or light orange globular aggregates that are prized by mineral enthusiasts worldwide.
Neat white crystallized balls of thomsonite, the prominent 12.8 cm in diameter, with little attached matrix. This is in great condition. Collected in the middle 2000's. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.3 x 3.3 x 3.1 cm (miniature)
