Sulfur with Aragonite
specimen number:
2063193
location:
Agrigento, Sicily, Italy
description: Agrigento, Sicily, features a unique geology defined by Miocene sedimentary rocks of the Gessoso-Solfifera formation, which hosts massive deposits of native sulfur alongside gypsum and limestone. Historically, this region was the center of global sulfur production during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, driving local economies through intensive underground mining despite dangerous labor conditions. Today, the area is celebrated for its rich industrial heritage, and its historical mines and surrounding outcrops remain famous among mineral collectors for yielding exceptionally well-formed sulfur crystals.
An aesthetic miniature with two sharp gemmy yellow crystals of sulfur, these semi lustrous and measuring to 1.3 cm in size, on a matrix of crystalline aragonite. This is in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 4.0 x 3.0 x 1.2 cm (miniature)
