Sulfur
specimen number:
2063104
location:
Maybee Quarry, Exeter, Monroe Co., Michigan, USA
description: The Maybee Quarry in Exeter Township, Monroe County, Michigan, exposes Paleozoic sedimentary bedrock consisting primarily of vuggy dolostone formed in shallow marine environments. Historically operated for aggregate and stone production, the quarry became famous among mineral collectors for its exceptional cavity fillings. Groundwater movement through the porous carbonate strata deposited fine specimens of native sulfur, blue celestine crystals, and fluorescent calcite, making the site a celebrated midwestern locality for mineral collecting.
A loose very sure well-formed tetragonal crystal of slightly translucent and lustrous native sulfur. Sharp in form, complete all around. Very little attached matrix. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark who collected the specimen in 1999.
Size: 4.0 x 2.0 x 1.2 cm (miniature)
