The Stoneco Lime City Quarry in Wood County, Ohio, is situated over extensive Paleozoic sedimentary bedrock formed by ancient shallow inland seas that deposited thick layers of carbonate-rich muds, coral, and shells, eventually solidifying into high-purity limestone and dolomite. Over subsequent millennia, glacial activity shaped the flat regional topography and left behind superficial deposits that blanketed the bedrock. Commercial mining operations developed here to extract the high-quality rock for aggregate, construction materials, and industrial uses, while the active and abandoned pits have since become renowned among mineral collectors for yielding notable specimens of crystallized minerals within the carbonate matrix.
