location:
Stoneco Lime City Quarry, Lime City, Wood Co., Ohio, USA
description: The Stoneco Lime City Quarry, located in Lime City, Wood County, Ohio, operates within the Silurian-age Lockport Dolomite and Salina Group formations of the Findlay Arch region. Historically mined for crushed stone, industrial lime, and aggregate, this prolific limestone and dolomite quarry became famous among mineral collectors in the mid-to-late twentieth century for producing exceptional crystal specimens. Deep solution cavities and open pockets within the dense dolomite beds frequently yielded superb, highly lustrous celestine crystals ranging from clear to sky-blue, often perched alongside well-crystallized white or translucent calcite, brassy pyrite, and golden sphalerite. Active quarry operations and strict modern site access restrictions have limited recent collecting, making classic display specimens from this historic northern Ohio locality highly sought after by mineral enthusiasts.
Lustrous gemmy amber colored crystals of fluorite measuring to 2.8 x 2.0 x 1.8 cm in size across a limestone matrix. These are nicely arranged, minimal cleaving present along one edge of the matrix only. The prominent crystals are in good condition. Incredibly fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
Size: 7.0 x 5.0 x 3.0 cm (small-cabinet)
