specimen number:
8911146
location:
Cobalt, Ontario, Canada
description: The town of Cobalt, located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, became famous after silver was discovered during the construction of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway in 1903. Geologically situated within the Southern Province of the Canadian Shield, the area features rich silver-cobalt vein systems deposited within fracture zones of Precambrian Huronian sedimentary rocks and Nipissing diabase sills. The discovery sparked a massive hard-rock mining boom in the early 20th century, transforming Cobalt into one of the world's most productive silver districts and earning it a reputation as the birthplace of Canadian hard-rock mining. Miners and collectors from around the globe flocked to the region to extract high-grade native silver, nickeline, safflorite, erythrite, and the town's namesake cobalt minerals. While large-scale mining operations eventually declined by the mid-1900s, Cobalt remains a legendary locality among mineral collectors worldwide for its iconic historic specimens and rich industrial heritage.
A fairly rich area of crystalline native silver coating one side of matrix. In good condition. The specimen comes with a previous label from the Alton collection.
