Schorl with Microcline
specimen number:
2063519
location:
Delmoe Lake area, Boulder Batholith, Jefferson Co., Montana, USA
description: Situated within the Boulder Batholith of Jefferson County, Montana, the Delmoe Lake Click to open side panel for more information area features rugged granitic terrain shaped by extensive intrusive igneous activity and subsequent hydrothermal processes. Historically, the region attracted prospectors and mineral collectors searching the numerous pegmatites, veins, and cavities formed during the cooling of the batholith. Within these localized hydrothermal pockets and fracture zones, well-formed crystals of schorl, the black iron-rich variety of tourmaline, frequently developed alongside quartz and feldspar. While historical prospecting and mining activity across the broader Boulder Batholith targeted various metallic ores, the surrounding national forest lands around the lake remain a popular locality for recreational mineral collectors seeking specimens of pegmatitic accessory minerals.
A cluster of lustrous black double terminated schorl crystals, this heavily encrusted with colorless blocky crystals of microcline. Complete all around and in good condition.
