Scholzite
specimen number:
2354192
location:
Reaphook Hill, South Australia, Australia
description: Located in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia, the Reaphook Hill deposit features rare zinc and phosphate mineralization hosted in weathered Early Cambrian siltstones and sandstones near the base of the local sedimentary sequence. Formed through near-surface groundwater alteration of primary minerals within complexly faulted zones, the site gained fame in the 1970s when small-scale mining operations began targeting its rich vugs for collector specimens. The locality is best known for producing scholzite, a secondary hydrous zinc phosphate mineral that develops as stunning sprays of white, lustrous needle-like crystals or flattened prismatic clusters lining open cavities alongside other rare phosphate species.
White lustrous radiating sprays of acicular scholzite, the crystals measuring to 1.0 cm in length, across the top of matrix. In good condition, very nice for this classic Australian material. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Jack Nieburger
