Scholzite
specimen number:
2063512
location:
Reaphook Hill, South Australia, Australia
description: Reaphook Hill, located in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia, is a famous mineral locality celebrated for its exceptional oxidation-zone zinc phosphate specimens. The geology consists of zinc-rich hydrothermal deposits within Cambrian limestone host rocks, where extensive supergene weathering and leaching altered primary ore minerals to form secondary phosphate species inside cavity networks and gossans. Discovered as a significant mineral site in the mid-twentieth century during mineral exploration and subsequent specimen mining operations, Reaphook Hill gained global recognition among collectors for producing some of the world's finest examples of scholzite. The locality yields scholzite as lustrous, colorfully translucent to transparent, colorless-to-white acicular needle-like sprays and fan-shaped clusters lining small vugs, making it a classic Australian locality represented in major worldwide collections.
Colorless acicular needlelike crystals of scholzite to 1.0 cm in length scattered richly across the front of matrix. Slight damage or contacting present as seen. The specimen comes with a previous label from the collection of Ray DeMark.
