The Michigan Gold Mine, located near Ishpeming in Ely Township, Marquette County, Michigan, began operations during the Upper Peninsula gold rush in the early 1880s and operated intermittently with various exploratory shafts, such as the historic No. 3 shaft, before activities wound down permanently in the early 20th century. Geologically, the site is situated within Precambrian-age metamorphic and igneous rock formations of the southern Canadian Shield, where quartz veins carrying native gold, silver, and associated sulfide or bismuth-bearing minerals formed within the complex structural geology of the region.
