Scawtite
specimen number:
2354092
location:
Crestmore Quarries, Riverside Co., California, USA
description: Located in Riverside County, California, the Crestmore Quarries exposed a world-renowned contact metamorphic deposit formed where quartz monzonite intruded into ancient dolomitic limestone and quartzite. Commercial limestone quarrying began in the early 20th century to supply raw materials for cement manufacturing, inadvertently uncovering an extraordinarily complex zone of high-temperature skarn mineralization. Over 100 rare minerals have been documented from the site, making it a legendary destination for mineral collectors and academic researchers alike. Among these unique phases is scawtite, a rare calcium silicate carbonate mineral that occurs as white or colorless crystals within the calc-silicate skarns. Although quarrying operations eventually wound down, the site remains an iconic mineralogical locality, though formal collecting access is now extremely limited.
Most of the top of this matrix is covered by white silky crystalline and massive scawtite. Good rich example for the species. The specimen comes with previous labels from Fraziers Minerals and Eric Laskowski.
